Math
The K-8 Westborough Mathematics Curriculum supports the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics (2017) which reflects a set of common, internationally-benchmarked academic standards in mathematics. Our vision is to develop mathematicians who can solve real world problems, think flexibly, and justify their reasoning. As such, we strive to provide students an opportunity to understand the math, do the math and apply the math to solve problems. When students are able to make connections among these core elements, they are able to understand increasingly complex mathematics.
Being prepared for the 21st-century workforce requires being able to do more than simply compute or carry out procedures. Students need conceptual understanding as well as procedural fluency, and they need to know how, why, and when to apply this knowledge to answer questions and solve problems. They need to be able to reason mathematically and communicate their reasoning effectively to others. The Westborough Public Schools math instruction includes a balance of conceptual understanding, procedural knowledge, and the application skills and concepts to solve complex problems accurately.
